Fly In to Laguna

The days are counting down for the AIDS Services Foundation Orange County’s Splashback to Fantasy Island, Friday, Sept. 22, and Sunday, Sept. 23, on the grounds of the Festival Arts, 650 Laguna Canyon Rd., Laguna Beach. If you’ve never been to one of ASF’s Splash events, you owe it to yourself to see the biggest production in Splash’s 20 years. General admission tickets for the Friday night preview start at $50, and the Saturday night main event are $250. For more information, call (949) 809-8760, or go to www.ocasf.org.

Mick and Mack’s: New Name for Familiar Spot

You’ve probably been there when it was Hamburger Mary’s or Choices, but on Thursday, Sept. 14, new owners Michael Hanson and Kristopher McGowan will open the doors of 740 E. Broadway, Long Beach, to welcome the public to Mick and Mack’s. The festivities will continue through Sunday, Sept. 17, with a Hollywood-style party on Friday, Club Asia on Saturday, and the opening of their fabulous brunch on Sunday. They promise a full schedule of events every night of the week, including the Starlette Revue on Tuesdays, My Big Fat Drag Show with Delta Work on Wednesdays, and much more. For more information, call (562) 983-1212, or go to www.mickandmacks.com.

Fashionable Lesbians

The Womynz Brunch Bunch is trying something different on Sunday, Sept. 30: their first lesbian drag show. Titled RUN-a-WAY Fashion, the event will take place at the offices of Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride at the corner of 10th and Obispo at 7 p.m. “The possibilities for bad jokes about lesbians and fashion are endless,” says WBB organizer Pat Lamis. ”After watching the L Word on TV and reading an article on lesbian fashion in Curve magazine, I began to think about lesbian fashion—just what is it? I want to provoke conversation on the subject; I also want to promote lesbian designers.” Tickets are $20, and part of the proceeds will benefit Long Beach Pride. For more information, call (562) 493-2614, or go to www.womynzbrunchbunch.org.

For their Sept. 13 general meeting, L.O. welcomes former Laguna Beach mayor and current City Councilmember Toni Iseman, who’s been serving on the City Council for eight years.
