Dolly Parton has long been a favorite among the gay community.
With her penchant for dressing up like the town floozie,
her breezy personality and her love for anyone who loves
her, Dolly has become a gay icon of the highest stature.
It’s no wonder that drag queens and fag hags alike
love her. If you want to see that admiration in action, then
you might want to head on over to the Cavern Club Celebrity
Theater and check out the Boofont Sisters in their brand
new hootenanny of a show, Dolly Wouldn’t.
A “celebration of all things Dolly,” the show
features the sister-“sister” team of Vicky and
Ruby Boofont—backed by the all-girl Dime Box Band—performing
several of Dolly’s tunes that lend themselves to the
sordid and comic story of the Boofonts—aka Joe (“Vicky”)
and Ruby—who have been performing together “since
we were born!” Vicky says. “Our sister, Sapphire,
pushed us on to the stage at an early age, and we haven’t
looked back since.”
Vicky says the show was inspired by “our love for Dolly,” who,
she adds, is “flashy, trashy and splashy—just
like the Boofont Sisters!” In fact, Vicky adds, “Dolly
once said [in Steel Magnolias], ‘It takes a lot of
money to look [this cheap].’ She must have been talking
about us!”
In addition to scripted dialogue and Dolly’s songs,
Vicky says audiences can also expect to experience “clog
dancing, me playing the Autoharp and a great version of ‘Islands
in the Stream’ that will make you pee.” And,
she adds, the show will feature “lots of wig and costume
surprises. Not only will you walk away from a great night
of entertainment, you’ll be talking about our costumes
and wigs for the next year!”
While that remains to be seen, one thing is certain: With
Vicky having recently been released from rehab and inspired
by Dolly’s tragic ballad “Me and Little Andy,” Dolly
Wouldn’t promises to be one helluva trashy extravaganza
to rival Ms. Parton herself. And what gay person in his or
her right mind wouldn’t want to wallow in that?
The Boofont Sisters’ Dolly Wouldn’t debuts at
the Cavern Club Celebrity Theater, 1920 Hyperion Ave., Silverlake,
on July 27, and runs Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 4.
