Entertainment suggestions that might fly under your radar.
Books
Do you find it impossible to imagine a world not lived to
a soundtrack of show tunes? What Would Barbra Do? How Musicals
Changed My Life by Emma Brockes is for you.
Clothing
You’ve got your headbands, metallic leggings and satin
skating jacket. All you lack is a Xanadude T-shirt, inspired
by the sorta-classic Olivia Newton-John cult flick, also
a new Broadway musical. Visit www.cafepress.com/ricknsteve/3169312 to order. Your neon light will shine for you, Xanadude!
DVDs
Kitsch abounds on these trashy melodramas from the ‘60s
and ‘70s that explore the forbidden love between two
ladies. Just the Two of Us finds two lonely housewives pawing
at each other when their husbands are away, while That Tender
Touch is the entertaining story of a lesbian who gets her
head turned by a man.
Music
Sure, we love our doggie friends, but some things just defy
logic—like doggie T-shirts, doggie birthday parties
and Happy 2B A Dog Lover, a compilation of feel-good songs
to listen to with your pooch. Buy it for the kitsch value,
but don’t expect your pooch to get it. We’re
sure he’d just as soon head to the park to sniff
other dogs’ rears.
Show Tunes
The week after quietly coming out in a print interview, David
Hyde Pierce snagged a Tony Award for his portrayal of a
musical theater-loving detective in Curtains, the last
collaboration between Broadway legends John Kander and
Fred Ebb. In addition to Hyde Pierce’s wry gumshoe,
the new cast album captures performances by Debra Monk,
Karen Ziemba and Jason Danieley.
Although The Pirate Queen lasted a mere 85 performances
on Broadway this season, the latest Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel
Schönberg extravaganza has all of the musical grandiosity
we’ve come to expect from the boys who gave us Les
Misérable and Miss Saigon. With a saucy Irish lass
as a sea captain giving Queen Elizabeth I plenty of attitude,
the posthumous cast album includes plenty of power ballads
that should keep the score living on in cabarets everywhere.
